International women's day 2024: A look at key state government schemes for females
International Women's Day is celebrated globally on March 8 — a day which is dedicated to recognising contributions of women across the world. In an effort to uplift and empower women across the nation, various state governments have rolled out schemes aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by women.

These schemes encompass a wide range of areas, from education and healthcare to entrepreneurship and social welfare.
Here are some of the most popular state government initiatives for women:
Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana
- Delhi
Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana is a flagship programme introduced by the Delhi government under which, every woman above 18 years of age will be given ₹1,000 monetary assistance every month.
If a woman is a resident of Delhi and has a Voter ID card of the National Capital, she can avail the benefits of Mukhyamantri Mahila Samman Yojana.
Delhi government clarified that only women can apply for the scheme, who are:
  • Not receiving pension or aid under any scheme from the Delhi government.
  • Are not government employees.
  • Are not tax-paying women.
  • Have a Delhi voter ID
  • Mission Shakti - Uttar Pradesh
    Uttar Pradesh government's flagship program is aimed at promoting the security, dignity and empowerment of women.
    The scheme was launched in phases which included initiatives such as Mission Shakti Kaksha (classrooms) at all the 59,000 Gram Panchayat Bhawans (Village Panchayat Buildings), formation of one lakh women self-help groups, linking of 1.73 lakh new beneficiaries to the destitute women pension scheme, safe city project at the divisional headquarters and Gautam Buddha Nagar, among others.
    Mukhyamantri Kanya Sumangla Yojana - Uttar Pradesh
    With an aim to end inequalities and discrimination, Uttar Pradesh introduced this conditional cash transfer scheme.
    It is an initiative to ensure social security to the girl child along with her development.
    It also aims to prevent social vices like female feticide and child marriage while focusing on opportunities for them to advance towards higher education, employment and an important status in the society.
    Nirbhaya-Ek Pahal Program - Uttar Pradesh
    The program aims to connect as many as 75,000 women with state banks. They will be able to get loans at cheaper interest rates and avail benefits of state subsidies.
    Manjhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme - Maharashtra
    Under this scheme, Maharashtra government provides financial assistance as follows:
    One Girl Child: ₹50,000 for a period of 18 years
    Two Girl Children: ₹25,000 each on the name of both the girls
    Benefits are applicable only to the families having monthly income up to 7.5 lakh and only after submission of family planning certificate.
    The families can withdraw accumulated interest after every six years.
    Kanya Utthan Yojana - Bihar
    The Bihar government launched the Bihar Kanya Utthan Yojana program to encourage females in the state to pursue higher education. The initiative compensates the girl with roughly ₹50,000 till she completes her graduation.
    Mukhyamantri Udyami Yojana - Bihar
    Mukhyamantri Udyami Yojana is one of the welfare schemes launched by the Bihar Government. The beneficiaries of this scheme can get financial aid to set up their industry in Bihar.
    Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandhana Yojna - Haryana
    A cash incentive of ₹5,000 in three instalments are paid directly to Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers (PW&LM) for first living child of the family subject to their fulfilling specific conditions relating to Maternal and Child Health.
    The scheme has been implemented from 2017 in all the districts of Haryana.
    Mahila Shakti Abhiyan (Women's Empowerment Campaign) - Maharashtra
    This campaign focuses on education, skill development, and health for women in rural and urban areas.
    Special attention is given to promoting gender equality and creating an environment conducive to women's progress.
    Amma Two-Wheeler Scheme - Tamil Nadu
    Under this initiative, the government provides subsidies to women to purchase two-wheelers, enabling them to commute conveniently and independently.
    Under the scheme, there is a 50% subsidy capped at ₹25,000 offered to working women who want to purchase a two-wheeler.
    Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana - Rajasthan
    Rajasthan's Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana is aimed at supporting the marriage expenses of economically disadvantaged families with daughters.
    The scheme provides financial assistance to ensure that financial constraints do not become a barrier to a girl's marriage.
