The BSE Sensex ended at 38,896, rising by 202 points or 0.52 percent, while the NSE Nifty 50 settled at 11,738.50, gaining 46.55 points, or 0.40 percent.
Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), HDFC twins, Infoys, Vedanta, Adani Ports and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) were among major gainers, while Yes Bank and PSU Bank shares nosedived.
Here's a list of stocks that trended among the most in the market today:
NTPC: Shares ended at Rs 168.35, rising 1.32 percent, after hitting a three-month high of Rs 174.55 in intraday trade. The scrip gained on hope of consolidation within the power sector after the Allahabad High Court refused to extend the deadline for finalising resolution plan for stressed assets.
Jet Airways: Shares recovered to end 6.22 percent higher at Rs 299.80, after slipping nearly three percent in initial trade to Rs 271.65. The rally happened after reports that Boeing will likely return around $200 million, which is a portion of the amount paid by the company to procure 75 Boeing 737 Max, to help the financially stressed company.
Vipul: Shares of the company ended 5.42 percent higher at Rs 52.50. Intraday, the stock soared 18 percent to touch its three month high of Rs 58.80, after opening at Rs 52.
JKumar Infraprojects: Shares closed at Rs 247.70, spiking 10 percent. Brokerage Citi Research initiates coverage with 'Buy' rating and target price of Rs 416.
Page Industries: Shares ended at Rs 35,999, rising by 0.77 percent or adding Rs 274.35 to the stock. Intraday, it touched a high of Rs 36,370, after opening at Rs 35,998. The scrip crossed the Rs 36,000 mark for the first time today, returning 9,900 percent since its issue price in 2007.
Reliance Industries: RIL shares closed at Rs 1,318.20, spiking by 2.06 percent, after hitting an intraday high of Rs 1,323. Shares of RIL today rose for the seventh consecutive session, marking their longest winning run since June. RIL's shares have jumped 10 percent so far in August, adding to the 22 percent gains seen in July.
Berger Paints India: Shares ended at Rs 342.95, adding Rs 11.35 to the stock, or rising by 3.42 percent. Intraday, it touched a high of Rs 345.65.
TCS: Shares of TCS traded at Rs 2,070.15, rising by 0.90 percent or adding Rs 18.50 in value to the stock, at 2.38 pm on the BSE. Intraday, it touched 52-week high of Rs 2,071.45, after opening at Rs 2,052.75. It settled at Rs 2,065.55, up 0.68 percent.
Vedanta: The mining giant's shares ended at Rs 230.40, higher by 2.20 percent. Shares of metal companies extended their gains to the third straight session on Tuesday, aided by higher global prices of base metals.
REC: Rural Electrification Corp Ltd shares fell to an intraday low of Rs 113.50, eventually settling at Rs 114.75, down by 3.93 percent.
