In a filing to the stock exchanges, Grasim Industries said that Birla Cellulose’s Kharach plant, located in Gujarat, has successfully commissioned a CAP (carbon-disulfide adsorption plant) CS2 recovery system from exhaust gasses while achieving EU BAT status.
The said unit has deployed closed-loop technologies to minimise the emissions of CS2 and Hydrogen Sulphide. This will be done by recovering CS2 and elemental sulphur from H2S. The company said the unit has already achieved its target of recovering 90–95% of sulfur.
A part of the Aditya Birla Group, Birla Cellulose produces Man-Made Cellulosic Fibers (MMCF). It operates 12 sites that apply environmentally efficient closed-loop technologies, which recycle materials and conserve natural resources.
The UK-based high-impact climate solution provider BluWin Ltd has also conducted an independent assessment, further validating the development. The validation has been done for all the parameters as stipulated in EU BAT BREF for viscose fibre manufacturing.
“This is a noteworthy milestone in line with global best practices and a step forward towards achieving global leadership in sustainable practices in the MMCF industry,” stated the MD of Grasim Industries and Business Director of Birla Cellulose, HK Agarwal.
Grasim Industries noted in a press release that Birla Cellulose was ranked first in the recently released Canopy’s Hot Button Report 2023 for its sustainable forestry practices and innovations in NextGen solutions.
Shares of Grasim Industries were trading 0.63% higher at ₹2080.75 apiece on BSE at 2:55 PM.
