India is gearing up for the 17th Lok Sabha elections, which will be conducted in seven phases starting April 11. Counting of votes will be done on May 23. The country held its first general elections in 1951 and almost 1,874 candidates contested from 54 political parties in that election. About 3.54 lakh voters on average represented one Lok Sabha member.
In the 2014 elections, the average number of voters represented by a member of parliament was over 15 lakh, the largest number by far in the world.
