The rupee declined by 15 paise to close at 82.31 against the US dollar on Wednesday amid a rise in crude prices and a firm greenback in the overseas market.
Crude oil benchmarks and the US dollar index moved lower.
The dollar index — which measures the American currency against the yen, the pound, the Canadian dollar, the Swedish krona, the Swiss franc and the euro — was last trading 0.02 per cent to 102.13 in early Asian trade.
Indian indices opened on a positive note on March 29 amid mixed global cues. The Sensex was up 180.98 points or 0.31 percent at 57,794.70, and the Nifty was up 58.00 points or 0.34 percent at 17,009.70.
Global oil benchmark Brent crude futures rose 0.94 per cent to USD 79.39 per barrel.
Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers in the capital market on Tuesday as they bought shares worth Rs 1,531.13 crore, as per exchange data.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the domestic unit opened sharply lower at 82.26 and touched an intra-day high of 82.23 and a low of 82.37 against the greenback.
BSE Sensex rose 346 points and closed at 57,960 while Nifty 50 ended 129 points higher than previous close to 17,081. All sectors ended in green.
