Lasting for 29 to 30 days, it is a period when Muslims across the world fast from dawn to sunset. As the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, Ramadan commemorates the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.

This year, the holy month in Mecca will either start on Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the moon, Al Jazeera reported. During Ramadan, Muslim families and communities come together to share meals and strengthen their bonds.
