Holika Dehan, also known as Choti Holi, is celebrated on the night before Holi, the festival of colour. On this occasion, people gather around a bonfire to celebrate the victory of good over evil. This year, Holika Dehan falls on Sunday, March 24, 2024.

Holika Dehan 2024: Date/Timings/Shubh Muhurat
The auspicious time or Shubh Muhurat for Holika Dehan is between 11:13 pm and 12:27 am on March 25, for 1 hour and 14 minutes.
Holika Dehan: Rituals
Holika Dehan involves various customs and practices. The central element is the preparation of a bonfire using wood, twigs, and other combustible materials, after which an effigy of Holika, symbolising evil, is placed on top of the pyre. People then light the bonfire and chant mantras and prayers which invoke blessings and purify the environment.
Devotees circle the fire, and the act symbolises the win of good over evil. They make offerings like grains, ghee and coconuts to the flames as a form of gratitude and ask for blessings. The ashes from the bonfire are considered a form of protection, often taken as a symbol of security against evil elements. Holika Dahan is a communal celebration, celebrating unity and joy among the people and setting the stage for the Holi festivities.
Holika Dehan: History
Holika Dehan has its roots in Hindu mythology. The story is woven around the legend of Prahlad and his evil aunt Holika. As per the ancient Hindu texts, Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, but his father, Hiranyakashipu, was a demon king, who hated Lord Vishnu. When none of the threats could make Prahlad give up his devotion, Hiranyakashipu sought the help of his sister Holika, who had a boon to be immune to fire.
Holika tricked Prahlad into sitting on her lap in a burning pyre, believing the fire would not harm her. However, divine intervention led to Holika burning in the fire while Prahlad remained unscathed. This event symbolises the victory of good over evil.
Holika Dehan: Significance
The bonfire during Holika Dehan holds huge significance. It purifies people, cleansing them of sins and negativity, marking the beginning of spring, which signifies renewal and regeneration. The spirit of community bonding rises along with the flames, with families and communities coming together to celebrate. The cultural traditions of Holika Dehan connect people to their heritage, creating unity among the community.
