Balenciaga’s latest fashion drop is just a luxury bath towel worth ₹77,000
In the unpredictable world of Balenciaga’s avant-garde fashion, the brand’s creative genius, Demna Gvasalia, has once again left heads turning with the introduction of the Towel Skirt. Unveiled during the Spring 2024 show in Paris recently, this peculiar garment is causing a stir because of its hefty price tag. The latest fashion piece from the top brand looks like a towel wrapped around your waist.

For the jaw-dropping price of $925 (nearly ₹77,000), you might expect a towel made of rare fabrics or adorned with luxurious details. However, the reality is a knee-length skirt made from your standard terry-cotton towel, albeit in an all-over beige with a Balenciaga logo embroidered on the front. Unveiling a unisex design with adjustable features, the Towel Skirt has been raising eyebrows.
Minus the inside belt and fancy buttons, it’s basically your everyday terry cotton bathroom towel pulling a fashion prank.
Gvasalia, the design virtuoso from Georgia, has a flair for crafting outrageously expensive luxury items. However, a shift occurred after Balenciaga’s 2022 holiday ad ignited accusations of child sexualisation, prompting the 42-year-old to momentarily steer clear of flamboyant creations. In February, he told Vogue that he would return to Balenciaga’s roots and make “quality clothes,” not “image or buzz.”
Cue the grand reveal of his fall 2023 collection, he paid homage to the original brilliance of Cristóbal Balenciaga – think body-morphing volume and meticulous detailing, according to Business Insider.
Despite applause for the refined tailoring, Vanessa Friedman, a critic from the New York Times, labelled the runway show a “march of the penitents,” dismissing the clothes as lacking revolutionary fervour.
Gvasalia, while calling himself a “forever designer,” vowed to spotlight garments. Yet, a ₹77,000 bath towel made an entry.
Balenciaga has mastered the art of launching unconventional products that could easily pass as DIY projects – from the extravagant ₹1,50,000 Trash Bag to quirky shoelace earrings and the unforgettable dirtied-up Paris sneakers.
While skirts over pants signal the return of Y2K trends, our commitment to fashion sanity stops at styling a ₹77,000 towel around our waist. Even though the unexpected is always in Balenciaga’s vogue, the towel skirt has drawn criticism from various sections.
