General Electric Transportation on Wednesday announced that the company's diesel-electric locomotives have been approved by the Indian Railways for operations.
GE’s 4500-horsepower diesel electric evolution series prototype locomotive was accepted by the Indian Railways after intense testing and trials, the company's statement said.
“The new units feature an Evolution Series engine and an electronic fuel-injection system for improved fuel efficiency, as well as compliance with international emission standard UIC1. The individual axle-control AC propulsion technology will improve hauling capability and decrease life-cycle cost. The locomotives also are digitally enabled for predictive analytics to increase reliability and availability,” the statement read.
The $2.5 billion locomotive deal was signed in 2015 under the ‘Make in India’ program which included an order of 1,000 locomotives and the establishment of a GE Transportation factory and maintenance shed in India.
A maintenance shed in Roza, Uttar Pradesh is already ready for operations while the construction of a second factory in Marhowra, Bihar is in advanced stage of completion. Once completed, all engines built in Marhowra will have localised content, the statement added.
