India's rice exports have grown 70 percent in the first half of FY21 on the back of strong demand from West Africa and South East Asia.

While volumes have increased, realizations per tonne have dropped. Ashwani Kumar Arora MD & CEO of LT Foods and Anil Mittal, CMD of KRBL discuss all this and more.
Arora said, “The bigger growth we have seen is in the non-basmati rice from last year. In the first seven months it has grown more than 100 percent and that is only because India is sitting on a good stock position. Good crop and competitive price that has given India the growth in African and Asian markets.”
“Basmati has also grown by around 30 percent in the first seven months, partly the consumption has gone up and partly it has call in to the stock up because of this COVID,” he said.
Mittal informed that from April to September this year, India exported around 2.4 million metric tonnes of rice that is valued at around Rs 15,900 crore as compared to 1.87 million metric tonnes valuing around Rs 14,200 crore, registering an increase of around 24 percent.
“There has been a fantastic demand post-COVID and the numbers in basmati rice are quite impressive,” Mittal said.
