World Consumer Rights Day 2024: Here’s how to file a complaint online
World Consumer Rights Day, observed every year on March 15, focuses on raising awareness about consumer rights and needs. It offers an opportunity to celebrate the power of consumers and respect and protect their rights.

According to reports, the first World Consumer Rights Day was celebrated in 1983 and since then the day has become a global event. John F Kennedy, the former President of the United States, was the first world leader who came forward to address the issue of consumer rights.
In India, the Consumer Protection Act, of 1986, outlines the basic rights, including the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, and standard, of a consumer. These provisions allow a consumer of goods or services to have a clearer idea about what he or she is going to get out of purchasing a certain item or product.
Right to Safety
The right protects the consumer against the marketing of goods and services that are hazardous to life and property. It also insists consumers check the quality of the products before purchasing.
Right to be Informed
The consumer needs to be informed about the quality, quantity, potency, purity, standard, and price of goods and services that have been purchased. This protects the consumer from unfair trade practices.
Right to Choose
This right under the Consumer Protection Act states all consumers have the right to choose from various products or services. The consumer under this right can ask for different options when he/she is unsatisfied.
Right to be Heard
In the Right to be Heard, a consumer is ensured by the Act that they will be given proper consideration at the relevant forums.
Right to Consumer Education
Consumers have the responsibility to be aware of their rights. This right means acquiring knowledge and relevant skills to inform the consumer.
Right to Seek Redressal
As per the Act, every consumer has the right to claim redressal against unfair trade practices or exploitation and demand a fair settlement in case of genuine grievances. For the same, a consumer must file a complaint against the exploiter.
