Why is National Daughters Day celebrated and what is its significance
The last Sunday of September is celebrated as Daughter's Day in India and it falls on September 24 in 2023. According to UNICEF, India stands as the only major country with a higher mortality rate for girls than boys. The country has a sex ratio at birth of 900 girls for every 1000 boys. Globally, 7 percent more boys pass away under the age of five compared to girls. In contrast, in India, the statistics are grim, with 11 per cent more girls succumbing before they reach the age of five.

In light of these alarming statistics, it is important to empower girls by investing in their well-being. National Daughter’s Day serves as a reminder that girls should be provided with equal opportunities, including education, life skills, and participation in sports, among other avenues.
History
In India, the roots of National Daughters Day can be traced to when it was first celebrated in 2007. In a society where sons have been traditionally revered for centuries, daughters have often taken a backseat. This day was born with the noble purpose of encouraging parents to express their appreciation for their daughters.
Daughters have, in some cultures, been perceived as a burden rather than a blessing. National Daughter’s Day seeks to change this narrative, urging mothers and fathers to recognise the remarkable gift their daughters represent.
Significance
The significance of National Daughters Day is found in the evolving times we live in. It is a day devoted to joyfully celebrating the presence of daughters in our lives. Falling on a Sunday means an opportunity for parents and daughters to share quality time, cherish one another and engage in conversations about their personal lives. It is a day for sharing, caring and strengthening the precious bond between parents and daughters.
