Indian national Pat Nibin Maxwell, who was working in Israel, died on Monday in an anti-tank missile attack. Two other people were injured when Hezbollah terrorists from Lebanon targetted an orchard near the Margaliot town on the northern border of Israel. Maxwell as well as the other two, identified as Bush Joseph George and Paul Melvin, were from Kerala.
George was taken to Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva after he sustained injuries to his face. Melvin, who was slightly injured, is being treated at Ziv Hospital in the northern Israeli city of Safed.
The mortal remains of Pat Nibin were identified in Ziv Hospital, as per news agency PTI. The 31-year-old went to Israel two months ago and was working on a farm when the attack happened. He is survived by his wife, who is expecting another child, and a five-year-old daughter.
Zaki Heller, a spokesperson for the rescue service Magen David Adom (MDA), told PTI that the missile hit a plantation in Margaliot, a collective agricultural community known as a moshav, in the northern Galilee region of Israel around 11 am on Monday.
Talking about what happened, Pathrose Maxwell, Pat Nibin's father, said that he got a call from his daughter-in-law around 4:30 pm. She told him that his son had been in an accident. Later, around 12:30 am, he was told that his son had died. “I have three children. Two of them are in Israel, and one is working in Abu Dhabi,” the deceased’s father said. “Pat Nibin has a daughter who is five years old. His wife is seven months pregnant,” he added.
Hezbollah started attacking Israel's northern areas and military bases on October 8, in support of Gaza.
As this news came to light, the Israeli Embassy in India expressed grief over the death of Pat Nibin. In a post on X, the Embassy said, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of one Indian national and the injury of two others due to a cowardly terror attack launched by Shia Terror organization Hezbollah, on peaceful agriculture workers who were cultivating an orchard at the northern village of Margaliot yesterday early afternoon.”
The Embassy conveyed condolences to the affected families and assured that Israeli medical institutions were providing the best treatment to the injured. It added that Israel treated all victims of terrorism equally, regardless of nationality.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that they fired artillery at the site where the attacks happened. They claimed to have also targeted a Hezbollah compound in the southern Lebanese town of Chihine and another Hezbollah site in Ayta ash-Shab.
