Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, on Friday, inaugurated a café, completely managed by specially-abled staff, in the premises of the Supreme Court. Other judges of the apex court were also present on the occasion. The ‘Mitti Cafe’ is an initiative to empower people with special needs by providing them employment and livelihood opportunities.

Ayesha Alam, the CFO of Mitti Cafe said, “Mitti Café is the dream of a 23-year old, who wanted to show the world the magic of abilities.”
Alina Alam, the Founder and CEO of Mitti Cafe emphasised the significance of having a Mitti Café operated by adults with physical, intellectual, and psychiatric disabilities at the apex justice institution of India, conveying a powerful message about the essence of inclusive development.
“The only form of development is inclusive development, when you embrace and create opportunities for every faction of the society,” she said.
The Mitti Café is supported by the Hingorani Trust. Advocate Priya Hingorani, who has facilitated the process of opening the cafe on the premise of the Supreme Court, thanked CJI Chandrachud and the Supreme Court for promoting the initiative that aims to empower the specially-abled individuals.
A small cultural ceremony was organised on the occasion where all the judges and lawyers of the apex court were present. At the ceremony, the national anthem was sung in sign language.
The ‘Mitti’ Social Initiative Foundation, which operates these outlets, has over 35 cafes across the country which aims to provide employment to hundreds of adults with special needs. Prior to beginning its operation on the premise of the Supreme Court, the outlets have reportedly served over ten million meals. The Miti Café outlets are also located at Bengaluru International Airport and premises of Wipro, Accenture, and ANZ Bank.
According to the official website of Mitti, it is a non-profit organisation committed to the cause of employment and livelihoods for people who have special needs. The organisation aims to work towards the economic independence and dignity for adults with physical, intellectual and psychiatric disabilities.
Last year, CJI Chandrachud had called for a comprehensive Accessibility audit of the Supreme Court premises. The main goal of the audit was to make the justice system more accessible and to understand the challenges faced by the specially-abled individuals while interacting with the Supreme Court of India.
