Video of Surat residents searching streets for diamond goes viral; here’s what happened
The Varachha locality of Surat, Gujarat, recently witnessed a bizarre incident of locals searching for diamonds on the streets. After rumours spread about an unidentified businessman accidentally dropping a packet of diamonds worth crores, locals in the Varachha bazaar, a mini-market known for diamond trading, were out on the streets searching for the lost precious stones, according to an Ahmedabad Mirror report. Now, the videos and photos of the incident have gone viral on social media.

This rumour spread after a message spread within the local market about the businessman dropping diamonds worth crores on a road in the Varachha area. Even a message claimed that a packet of diamonds had somehow slipped and ended up on the road. The result was a scene reminiscent of a treasure hunt, with individuals meticulously searching for these precious gems on the streets. Some even went to the extent of collecting dust from the road in their quest to locate these valuable stones.
Even one person found a diamond, according to the Ahmedabad Mirror report. However, the excitement was short-lived as it was subsequently revealed that the ‘diamond’ found by a local in reality was an American diamond, which is commonly used in imitation jewellery.
Additionally, the claims that diamond traders were resorting to discarding their stocks due to financial hardship were debunked as fake news.
Surat's diamond market, home to half a million diamond workers, plays a pivotal role in supplying up to 90 percent of the world's cut and polished diamonds, used both in jewellery and as loose stones. Recent Western sanctions on Russian miner Alrosa, a significant source of rough diamonds for Surat, coupled with a decreased demand for polished diamonds in the international market, have impacted Surat’s diamond industry. The video footage from Varachha, Surat, was shared widely in this context.
Alpesh Gabani, the Police Inspector at Varachha Police Station, confirmed the incident to BOOM. He said, “Somebody dropped a bag of American diamonds on the street, following which the rumours started circulating. After this, people began looking for the diamonds on the street.” Additionally, Gabani reaffirmed that this incident was unrelated to the difficulties the diamond market was experiencing.
