Tunnel foreman Gabbar Singh Negi, senior-most among the 41 workers rescued from the collapsed Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi, was praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his telephonic conversation with them after the rescue operation came to an end late Tuesday.
While speaking to the Prime Minister, a worker from Bihar, Saba Ahmed mentioned how morning walks and yoga helped them in maintaining their mental wellbeing. It came to light that it was Gabbar Singh Negi, who helped his co-workers to remain physically and mentally fit during the trying circumstances. He taught them yoga and meditation to overcome the difficult situation they faced while being trapped inside the tunnel for 17 days.

Who is Gabbar Singh Negi?
Born in the Kotdwar city of Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, Negi was working as a tunnel foreman when the 41 workers got trapped in the Silkyara tunnel.
According to an NDTV report, Negi was unfortunately also earlier trapped in collapsed tunnels twice. Further, the report added that Negi told his brother Jaymal Singh Negi that he would be “the last person to come out of the collapsed tunnel” since he is the senior-most person among all the 41 workers.
PM Modi, during his conversation with the workers, hailed Negi's efforts and said that a university could include a case study on his leadership quality to look after his co-workers inside the Silkyara tunnel during the difficult times.
Speaking with the Prime Minister, Negi expressed gratitude to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the rescue teams. He noted that there was no shortage of food and that the Central and state governments and the rescue teams kept them motivated throughout the operation.
“The rescue teams worked really hard to evacuate us. We remained in touch with them all the time. Also, we were able to communicate with our families from inside the tunnel on the phone,” Negi said.
It looks like Negi's efforts were successful as all the 41 workers have been declared healthy after screening and a health check-up at Chiniyalisaur Community Health Centre, ANI reported.
“All 41 workers are currently healthy; their health screening has been done twice after the rescue, first inside the tunnel last night and second this morning. A team of 18 doctors at the Community Health Centre of Chinyalisaur has been monitoring their health since last night, out of which 10 are GDMOs and the remaining 8 are specialists, which include all types of specialists,” said Dr Bimlesh Joshi, Nodal Officer Health of the rescue operation, ANI reported.
The workers have been airlifted to AIIMS-Rishikesh for a health check-up on Wednesday, PTI quoted officials as saying.
They will be taken to the trauma ward of the hospital and later will be shifted to the disaster ward for a detailed examination of their health parameters.
