TN Rains : Heavy waterlogging in several areas of Chennai; Airport suspends flight arrivals

The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Chennai and seven other districts in Tamil Nadu as there is no respite from rains. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places with extremely heavy falls at isolated places today.

Rainfall recorded between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is heavy and between 115.6 and 204.4 is very heavy. Anything above 204.4 mm is considered extremely heavy rainfall.

# Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram districts in the next three hours: Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai
# Thunderstorm with moderate rain is likely to occur at one or two places over Villupuram, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Salem district of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and Karaikal in the next three hours: Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai
# Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reviews food preparation at a centre from where cooked food will be distributed to needy people. State to provide free food through Amma Canteens till the current intense rain spell ends. He also held meeting with officials in Chennai.
# Streets near High Court Metro Station waterlogged due to incessant rainfall in Chennai. "We've deployed 11 teams in TN and 2 teams in Puducherry. 5 more teams on standby. All teams are self-contained with equipment to deal with all types of disasters. Advice to people is that if your house isn't flooded then stay indoors," says Rekha Nambiyar, Sr Commandant, NDRF - 4th Battalion.
# Chennai Airport suspends all flight arrivals owing to heavy flooding. Departures to carry on for now, with mild alterations to schedule.
# Death toll rises to 14. 1,382 homes, including 1,072 huts damaged due to rains. Also, 157 cattle deaths have been reported in the flood.
# Rainwater enters ESI Hospital located in Chennai's KK Nagar. All facilities including OPDs are operational here with the available manpower. The hospital wards including COVID19 wards are not affected, says Dr Mahesh of ESI hospital.

# Southern Railway announces cancellation of trains to Tiruvallur district. Tracks in Avadi and Ambattur stations are heavily waterlogged. There can be a delay in travel between Chennai and Gummidipoondi.
# Heavy overnight rains bring Chennai to a halt as various neighborhoods and key roads are heavily inundated. 11 underpasses and 7 arterial roads are shut due to waterlogging. Central Chennai recorded an overnight rainfall of 14.05 cm, North Chennai - 17.5 cm.
