In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana’ to boost solar power and sustainable progress in India. Through the scheme, the government intends to light up one crore households by providing up to 300 units of free electricity every month. Days after the announcement, postal employees across Karnataka Postal Circle began enrolling households wanting to register under the scheme. Those willing to avail the benefits under the scheme are advised to contact the nearest post office.
Chief Postmaster General (CPMG), Karnataka Postal Circle, S Rajendra Kumar, told The New Indian Express that they initiated the registration a couple of days ago across their network. “We are targeting 5 lakh households and have covered roughly 20,000 houses so far. People can register at post offices, Gram Dak Sevaks, or approach our postmen/women who are carrying out a door-to-door survey in this connection. An electricity bill generated within the last six months is mandatory,” he said.
The registrations are reportedly a part of an all-India campaign carried out by India Post. For more registration and to explain to people the benefits of the scheme, the postal department will reportedly conduct door-to-door surveys through its field staff postmen and Grameen Dak Sewaks.
Sharing details about the registration process, Subhash Chandra Meena, Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Jalandhar, told The Tribune that details, including a photo of the rooftop, beneficiary’s mobile number, Aadhaar card, and electricity bill of the past six months, are required for the registration. These details will be uploaded on the app.
How to apply
People are advised to visit pmsuryaghar.gov.in to apply for the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. On the website, you will be asked to enter your state, electricity distribution company, electricity consumer number, mobile number, and email to proceed with the registration process.
As per the official website of the Centre’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the newly launched scheme will help the government save Rs 75,000 crore annually in electricity costs.
