Republic Day 2024: Meet the women who contributed to making of Indian Constitution

It's been 75 years of India's establishment as a sovereign state and we have hardly spoken or read about women's contribution to the making of the country's Constitution. So, no better day to remember them than this year’s Republic Day celebration on January 26, which also marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

Let us take a look at some of the women of the constituent assembly who contributed to making the Constitution.
Princess Amrit Kaur

Princess Amrit Kaur was the country's first health minister and was an integral part of the Constituent Assembly. The credit for the establishment of All India Institute of Medical Science i.e. AIIMS also goes to her.
Sarojini Naidu

Sarojini Naidu was called the Nightingale of India who was also a part of the Constituent Assembly. After independence, Naidu was made the Governor of Uttar Pradesh. This marked her as the first woman governor of any state in the country. Sarojini Naidu was also the first woman president of Congress.
Hansa Mehta

Hansa Mehta was known to be the one who raised the topic of the right of women to divorce in Parliament. She became the President of the All-India Women’s Conference in 1945-46. Following the same, she was also made a member of the Constituent Assembly. In the Constituent Assembly, Hansa raised the issue of women’s rights.
Leela Roy

Leela Roy was the only woman from Bengal in the Constituent Assembly. She joined the Congress in 1937 and following the same, she also became a member of the Forward Block of Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj.
Durgabai Deshmukh

Durgabai Deshmukh became a part of the country’s freedom struggle at the young age of 12. She had joined the non-cooperation movement at that age. She was the one who founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha to raise the voice of women. Along with this, she also started the Blind Relief Association besides being one of the integral personalities in crafting the Constitution of India.
Sucheta Kriplani

Sucheta Kriplani was the one who formed the women’s wing of the Congress party. She also played an important role at the time of the Quit India Movement. Later, she also held the position of cabinet minister in the state of Uttar Pradesh, besides being a crucial member of the Constituent Assembly.
