India's capital New Delhi and neighbouring areas witnessed strong tremors after a 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on Monday (November 6). According to the National Center for Seismology, the earthquake hit the Himalayan nation at 4:16 pm IST. The epicentre of the earthquake was located at 28.89 latitude & 82.36 longitude with a depth of nearly 10 km.
The fresh wave of tremors came just two days after a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Nepal, sending strong tremors that were felt across Delhi NCR and various parts of Uttar Pradesh on November 3. The deadly earthquake has left 153 people dead and more than 160 injured, as per the latest count.
“Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage due to the earthquake in Nepal. India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal and is ready to extend all possible assistance. Our thoughts are with the bereaved families, and we wish the injured a quick recovery,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi had stated, conveying his condolences to the neighbouring nation.
Nepal is situated within one of the world's most active tectonic zones (seismic zones IV and V), which often leads to high seismic activity in the mountainous nation.
