Nanded hospital deaths: Maharashtra to decide on forming inquiry committee as toll rises to 31

The Maharashtra cabinet is likely to discuss the Nanded Hospital deaths in a meeting on Tuesday, October 3. The Cabinet may decide on forming an inquiry committee over the incident, government officials told news agency ANI.

Authorities on Tuesday confirmed that seven more deaths occurred at the same facility between October 1 and 2. The District Information Office (DIO) of Nanded confirmed that the total count of the deceased patients in the hospital in 48 hours rose to 31.  Twenty-four deaths, including 12 infants, were reported between September 30 and October 1 in a government hospital in Nanded.
"In the last 24 hours, 24 deaths have been reported at Nanded Government Hospital and Medical College (GMCH). Of these, 12 are infants who were referred here by some local private hospitals. The remaining deaths are of adults for various reasons," Dr Dilip Mhaisekar, Director, Medical Education and Research, Maharashtra, told PTI.
Among the 12 adults who lost their lives, five were male and seven female. Four adults had heart-related ailments, one was suffering from an unknown poisoning, one had a liver issue, two were kidney patients, and one case was of complications during pregnancy. There were three accident cases, too, the hospital said.
Incidentally, in a 24-hour period between August 12 and 13, a total of 18 patients died in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa in Thane district.
