Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Monday inaugurated the first phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road project along with deputy CMs Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar.
The first phase that connects Worli to Marine Drive is a 10.5 kilometre long road with a significant part of it as an undersea tunnel. It is the first of its kind tunnel in the country.
The project has been built at an estimated cost of about ₹12,721 crore over five years by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). It has been named as Dharamveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Marg.
This phase of the project aims at reducing the travel time from 40 minutes to 9 minutes. The permitted speed limit on this road is 80km per hour but in the undersea tunnel, the speed limit has been capped at 60km per hour.
It has three entry points near Worli and two exits near Marine Drive.
Entry Points:
- Bindu Madhav Thackeray Junction
- Rajani Patel Junction (Lotus Junction)
- Amarsons Garden
Exit Points:
- Amarsons Garden
- Marine Drive (Princess Street Bridge)
Phase 2 of Mumbai Coastal Road
CM Shinde also noted that the phase two of the project will be open by May this year and that would connect it further till Dahisar. “The commute that would take about 2 hours will now be down to 45 minutes. The goal is to make every commute within the city to be of less than an hour. So, Dahisar to Nariman Point will be less than 45 minutes and in phases after that we will connect Mira-Bhayandar too,” he said.
At the event, Pawar noted that the state government is focusing on infrastructure development. “Shinde has spoken about concretisation quite a bit and he takes that project very seriously. Air and water pollution are important projects this government has been focusing on.”
On Sunday, the Mumbai Traffic Police released a list of vehicles that will not be allowed on the Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Marg.
Among the vehicles prohibited are:
Mumbai Police have further said that on a straight road, the vehicle speed will be restricted to 80 km/hr, while it will be 60 km/80 km/hr in the tunnel and 40 km/hr at the turning point and the entry/exit points.
The vehicular traffic on the coastal road will be allowed between 6 am and 8 pm from Monday to Friday.
Mumbai Central Park
A 320 acre park will be made adjacent to the coastal road, Deputy CM Fadnavis said. He said this park, incorporating land from the Mahalaxmi racecourse, will be the oxygen tank that the city needs.
Deputy CM Pawar said that the plan to make a central park adjacent to the coastal road, incorporating land from Mahalaxmi Racecourse will be a ‘game-changer’.
Siddhivinayak Temple Development
Speaking at the inauguration, CM Shinde also announced that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been prepared for the development of Mumbai’s famous Ganesh temple–Siddhivinayak. He also said that it would be inspired by the Mahakal corridor of Ujjain. The BMC has provisioned ₹500 crore for this project, Shinde added.
