The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued an advisory on Tuesday to ensure greater participation of women in the highway construction workforce. In its advisory, MoRTH says that there should be no discrimination in the recruitment of women workers or working conditions post-recruitment.

"For ensuring wide participation of women and providing gender-equal opportunities in the highway sector, MoRTH has decided to issue an advisory in line with the Statutory Provisions to all implementing agencies," the ministry said in its release.

In its advisory, the ministry has also emphasised on equal pay for equal work, irrespective of the gender of the individual. The wages of these workers should be transferred directly to bank accounts to ensure compliance with the Minimum Wages Act.

The advisory also stressed the overall well-being of women workers with access to basic amenities at construction sites. This also includes creche, a sitting area and reserved sections in the dining hall that must be provided to women construction workers by their employers.

MoRTH has also asked the employers to ensure paid maternity leave of 26 weeks for up to two deliveries to registered construction workers. For deliveries after two children, 12 weeks of paid maternity leave shall be provided by the employer, as per the advisory.
