The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed YouTube to deposit the revenue earned by Savukku Shankar earned through his videos accusing media company Lyca Productions of smuggling contraband substances.
Justice N Satish Kumar restricted Shankar from making any more unverified allegations against Lyca and also said that YouTubers did not have a license to tarnish the reputation of others.
A lawsuit was filed by Lyca Productions through Senior Advocate V Raghavachari seeking damages of ₹1 crore along with a permanent injunction prohibiting Shankar from making any defamatory or derogatory remarks against it, as per Bar and Bench.
The senior counsel told the court, earlier this month, Shankar had posted multiple defamatory videos against the media company on his YouTube channel. These videos have been shared and viewed more than 6,34,000 times. Hence, the videos had caused damage to the company’s reputation, he argued.
The court directed YouTube to deposit the revenue earned by Shankar from these videos to the credit of the civil suit filed by Lyca and posted the case to April 12.
