The Union Government has notified the Citizenship Amendment Act rules 4 years 2 months after it was cleared by the Parliament. The law aims to grant Indian citizenship to undocumented Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian immigrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan if they entered India before December 31, 2014.

The CAA was passed in December 2019 and subsequently got the president’s assent but there were protests in several parts of the country against it, with many Opposition parties speaking out against the law calling it “discriminatory.”
The law could not come into effect as rules had not been notified till now. The Congress alleged that the timing of notifying the rules is evidently designed to polarise the coming Lok Sabha elections, especially in West Bengal and Assam. Here’s the timeline of CAA.

On the CAA notification, North East DCP Joy Tirkey says, “We have made arrangements in the North East district. Our experience in 2020 was unpleasant which resulted in heavy loss. We have tagged the potential troublemakers and some known criminals. We are in touch with our beat constables and keeping an eye on social media too.
