The Infantry Day is commemorated every year on October 27 to recognise the contributions of the largest fighting arm of the Indian Army. On this day, the country pays tribute to the brave hearts who sacrificed their lives while protecting India.
The day is significant because on October 27, 1947, the first troops of the Indian Army landed at Srinagar airport, forcing the invaders, backed by Pakistan, to retreat.
Infantry Day 2023: History and Significance
On October 26, 1947, the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, signed the instrument of accession, and the princely state became a part of the Indian Union. Following the same, a Battalion of the Sikh Regiment reached the Srinagar air base to fight against the tribal invaders, who were backed by Pakistan.
However, before the first Battalion reached the battleground, Pakistan’s regular soldiers, reportedly disguised as volunteers from the tribal areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), had already entered Jammu and Kashmir. The invaders aimed to forcibly occupy the state and integrate it with Pakistan. Soon after the initial resistance by the state forces of J&K, Indian troops were called to fight on October 27 after the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession.
The first Indian battalion was then commanded by Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai. After securing the Srinagar airfield, the Indian soldiers rushed to Baramulla to stop the invaders in their tracks. Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai was able to delay the advances of the invaders towards Srinagar but he was martyred near Baramulla.
