A Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Jaisalmer on Tuesday. The pilot ejected safely out of the aircraft, which was flying on an operational training sortie.
In a statement, the IAF said, “One Tejas aircraft of the Indian Air Force met with an accident at Jaisalmer, today during an operational training sortie. The pilot ejected safely. A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to find out the cause of the accident.”
The Tejas was inducted into the Indian Air Force in 2016, and this is the first crash involving the indigenous jet since its first test flight, 23 years ago, in 2001.
Tejas LCA is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments to carry out missions on air defence, reconnaissance and strike roles.
The LCA trainer is a lightweight, all-weather, multirole aircraft that can undertake all roles of a single-seat Tejas fighter and can also be used as a fighter trainer.
LCA Tejas is a 4.5-generation multi-role fighter aircraft and is designed to provide offensive air support and close combat support for ground operations. It is designed to support the training requirements of the IAF and augment itself to the role of a fighter in case of necessity.
