Gujarat: 14 students, two teachers died as boat overturns in Vadodara, PM Modi expresses grief
14 students and two teachers died on Thursday after a boat capsized in Harni Lake on the outskirts of Vadodara in Gujarat, according to officials. The people on the boat visited the lake for a picnic in the afternoon.

There were 27 people on board, including 23 students and four teachers, when the tragedy occurred, as per officials.
Four people were still missing and the search and rescue operation at the site was ongoing, said National Disaster Response Force officials. One of the students rescued has been admitted to SSG Hospital, according to one of the police personnel at Harni police station.
In a message on social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Distressed by the loss of lives to a boat capsizing at the Harni lake in Vadodara. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. May the injured recover soon.”
PM Modi has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of all the persons who lost their lives in the accident. In addition, he has announced ₹50,000 for the injured individuals.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has handed over the high-level probe of the incident to Vadodara District Magistrate and has ordered a detailed report to the state government within 10 days.
The CM has also ordered a strong inquiry, and invoked IPC sections 304, 308, and 114 against the accused. He also visited the postmortem centre located at SSG Hospital. In the evening, he arrived at the site and monitored the rescue operation being undertaken by the NDRF personnel, the local fire brigade, and other agencies.
Earlier, Vadodara Chief Fire Officer Parth Brahmbhatt revealed that some of the people were rescued by local residents before the rescue mission started.
