GSI to submit geological report on Joshimath to Uttarakhand govt on Jan 22
The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is slated to submit a comprehensive report on the Geological and Geotechnical investigation of Joshimath Township in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district to the state government on January 22nd. Simultaneously, the GSI will also release the mineral map of Ladakh at the 63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting organised by the Ministry of Mines in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, next week.

The upcoming meeting will feature discussions on the follow-up actions related to the agenda items from the 62nd CGPB Meeting. Additionally, new agenda items proposed by stakeholders will be deliberated by officials from the Ministry of Mines and the GSI Board. The meeting will also address the field season proposals of GSI for the fiscal year 2024-25.
A dedicated session has been allocated to introduce stakeholders to the recently launched National Geoscience Data Repository portal. This cloud-based portal serves as a central hub for pre-competitive baseline geological data and mineral exploration data. It aims to streamline access for all participants in the mineral and mining sectors.
For the year 2024-25, GSI has outlined approximately 1,055 scientific programs. Among these, 392 mineral development projects (including G2, G3, G4, and offshore explorations) have the potential to generate auctionable mineral blocks in the near future. Additionally, 133 potential projects with a mineral bias, classified as Mineral Discovery Projects, are slated for future exploration in the G4 stage.
A significant emphasis has been placed on the exploration of strategic and critical minerals within the proposed activities. GSI plans to undertake 188 projects focusing on strategically important mineral commodities such as Rare Earth Elements (REE), Rare Metals (RM), Graphite, Lithium, Vanadium, and Platinum Group Elements (PGE), representing a 50% increase from the previous year's target.
Moreover, GSI is actively engaging in 111 projects under Natural Hazard Studies and Public Good Geoscience. Of these, 25 programs are being conducted at the request of states and Disaster Management Authorities, covering various aspects of natural hazards. Additionally, 43 programs are being carried out in collaboration with universities/agencies or sponsored by entities such as IITs, NGRI, DRDO, NRSC-ISRO, ASI, CGWB, Ministry of Jal Shakti, SJVNL, NWDA, Indian Railways, BRO, and State Irrigation Departments.
