The G20 Summit 2023 marked a significant moment for the global community, not only for the discussions and commitments made within the summit but also for the burgeoning partnership between the United States and India. Raymond Vickery, Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), emphasised the exceptional support that the United States has extended to India in its endeavours to ensure the success of the G20 Summit.

Vickery noted that this support transcended mere attendance and diplomatic niceties, highlighting President Biden's gesture of arriving a day early for the summit and sharing a dinner with Prime Minister Modi.
“The United States unlike China, or Russia, has been supportive of India and its efforts to make sure that this G20 Summit was successful. That extends all the way from President Biden showing up a day early and having dinner with the Prime Minister, and most importantly, to support of these infrastructure proposals and developments and more importantly, the ways to finance them.”
Vickery further highlighted the importance of the bilateral context in this cooperation, drawing attention to Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington in June. This visit marked a significant commitment between two great democracies to collaborate in bringing peace and prosperity to the world.
Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center, echoed Vickery's sentiments, emphasising the momentum in the US-India relationship. He noted that this momentum had been building since Prime Minister Modi's state visit to the United States several months prior to the G20 Summit.
Kugelman underscored the significance of President Biden's early arrival, facilitating a meeting with Prime Minister Modi to ensure that the positive momentum between the two nations persisted. Importantly, with both countries heading into elections the following year, maintaining this momentum was of paramount importance.
Kugelman also emphasised the deep levels of bilateral cooperation between the U.S. and India, a hallmark of a strong partnership. He pointed to the importance of their collaboration in the Indo-Pacific region and highlighted the potential for further cooperation, particularly in regions outside of Asia, such as the Middle East.
One of the major highlights of the G20 Summit was the discussion surrounding the infrastructure corridor deal between India, the Middle East, and Europe. Subhrakant Panda, President of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), regarded this initiative as immensely significant. He emphasised that this initiative was noteworthy not just in the context of countering the Belt and Road Initiative but also in its own right.
Panda stressed that this infrastructure corridor aligns with India's focus on connectivity and enhancing trade possibilities. The initiative is expected to streamline the movement of goods and potentially boost trade by up to 40 percent, a substantial development for Indian industry. Furthermore, the role played by the United States in facilitating this partnership amplifies India's standing in various groupings of world powers.
The 2023 G20 Summit served as a testament to the robust and evolving partnership between the United States and India. Their joint commitment to peace, prosperity, and infrastructure development showcased the strength of their relationship.
