Ahead of the upcoming festive season, FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) held a meeting with over 150 food business operators (FBOs) and manufacturers of Indian sweets and asked for strict compliance with the safety and quality of edibles and raw materials.
The meeting was focused on sensitising the ecosystem about the perishable high-risk edibles to ensure safe food throughout the touch points including manufacturing, storage, distribution and point of sale to the consumer.
The food safety regulator emphasised checking adulteration in raw materials, especially milk and milk products like Khoya, Paneer and ghee which have been termed as more susceptible to adulteration and contamination during the high consumption season.
Asking FBOs to focus on testing and purchase of milk-based raw materials only from FSSAI registered/licensed vendors, the regulator added that they also need to monitor the quality of oil during frying in compliance with the existing regulations. FSSAI called for safe display practices for loose sweets by discouraging outdoor cooking, which exposes food and raw materials to environmental contaminants and risks food safety.
