'Extremely heart-wrenching': Tributes pour in as renowned poet Munawwar Rana dies aged 71
Renowned Poet Munawwar Rana died after suffering from throat cancer for a long time. He was 71. Rana was undergoing treatment at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow.

His daughter Sumaiya Rana told PTI that her father died at the hospital on Sunday night and will be laid to rest on Monday.
“He was hospitalised for 14 to 15 days due to illness. He was first admitted to Medanta in Lucknow and then to SGPGI where he breathed his last around 11 pm today (Sunday),” Rana's son Tabrez Rana told the news agency.
Rana was born in 1952 in Rae Bareli and was honoured with the Gyanpeeth Award in 2014. Maa, a poem written by him, is considered one of his popular works and holds a special place in the world of Urdu literature. Rana used simple words to write his poems, which made them popular among the common people.

Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav condoled the poet's demise and shared a couplet from his poem on the social media site X.
“The demise of the country's renowned poet Munawwar Rana ji is extremely heart-wrenching. Wishing peace to the departed soul. Heartfelt tribute,” he wrote.
Rana took India's name to great heights and his demise is a big loss to the country, said Samajwadi Party spokesperson Fakrul Hasan Chand. “Samajwadi Party pays tribute to him on his sad demise. His demise is a big loss for the country,” he said.
Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) national campaign in charge Prashant Kanojia also paid homage to the renowned poet on X.
 
Raj Lakshmi Yadav, daughter of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad, said Rana's poetry was a “beautiful tribute, capturing emotions and leaving an indelible mark.”
“Saddened by the loss of renowned poet #MunawwarRana Ji. His poetry was a beautiful tribute, capturing emotions and leaving an indelible mark. May his soul rest in peace,” she wrote on X.
 
Meanwhile, netizens also reacted to Rana’s death and expressed condolences on the social media site.
“One of our favourite and the most watched #poet #MunawwarRana thanks for your wonderful and priceless poetic journey with us. May your soul rest in peace,” one person wrote.
Another one added, "Heartbroken by the passing of renowned Urdu poet #MunawwarRana sahib. His impactful poetry resonated deeply; a great soul who faced and reflected on the challenges of tough times. May his legacy endure!"
