Starting December 11, people can reach the scenic Nandi Hills, located just 60 km away from Bengaluru, via electric train. This comes as the South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to extend Memu (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) train services operating from Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur.
Here's the list of trains:
06531/06532 Bengaluru Cantonment-Chikballapur-Cantonment
06535/06538 Chikkaballapur-Bengaluru Cantonment-Chikkaballapur
06593/06594 Yeswantpur-Chikkaballapur-Yeswantpur
DEMU trains on the route
Presently, 06387/06388 KSR Bengaluru-Kolar-Cantonment Diesel Multiple Unit (Demu) and 16549/16550 KSR Bengaluru–Kolar-KSR Bengaluru Demu make stops at Nandi station.
SWR had previously planned a heritage rail tour on the Bengaluru-Devanahalli-Chikkaballapur route.
Siddharth Raja, a history buff, told MoneyControl, "You need to travel an extra 15–18 km to reach the top of Nandi Hills," he said. Raja resides in Nandi Hills.
The railway line from Devanahalli to Chikkaballapur was the first in the nation to be established by private enterprise (public-private partnership) during Sir M Visvesvaraya's term as the Diwan of Mysore in 1915. Sir M Visvesvaraya was born in Muddenahalli, Chikkaballapur.
