The National Capital on Monday, November 27, awoke to a dense shroud of smog as air quality once again approached the 'severe' category, according to monitoring agencies. At 9 am this morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 400.
Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts light rainfall for today and tomorrow (Tuesday), the air quality early warning system indicates that the AQI is expected to persist in the 'very poor' category at least until Wednesday.
A real-time source apportionment study conducted for the city revealed that the transport sector was the leading contributor to Delhi's deteriorating air quality in November. Data highlights vehicles, biomass burning (even when farm fires are limited), and secondary aerosols—particles formed in the atmosphere from gases released during fossil fuel combustion—as major contributing factors.
