Gian Singh, a 63-year-old farmer, who was among the farmers protesting at the Shambhu border near Haryana's Ambala, died of a heart attack on Friday, February 16. Singh was taken to the Civil Hospital in Punjab's Rajpura after he complained of chest pain in the morning.
Subsequently, he was rushed to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, where doctors declared him brought dead, according to statements from officials reported by PTI.
Hailing from Punjab's Gurdaspur district, Singh had come to the Shambhu border two days ago to participate in the farmers' 'Delhi Chalo' march. The protest is aimed at pressing the government to accept farmers’ demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had given a call for the march.
Farmers began the march on February 13 after a meeting with two Union ministers over their demands remained inconclusive. The farmers have been camping at Punjab and Haryana's Shambhu and Khanauri borders ever since.
The Haryana government had suspended mobile internet services, bulk SMS (excluding banking and mobile recharges) and all dongle services provided on mobile networks in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad and Sirsa ditricts till February 15, in view of farmers’ protest. Only voice calls were allowed in these districts.
A third round of talks between farmer union leaders and the government on February 15 remained inconclusive. The next round of talks will be held on February 18, the PTI reported.
