Cyclone Jawad Highlights: 
Heavy rains lashed parts of Odisha on Sunday as remnants of cyclone Jawad, which has weakened into a deep depression, neared the coast, officials said. The system moved north-northeastwards at 20 kmph in the last six hours and is over west-central Bay of Bengal, 90 km from Gopalpur, 120 km from Puri and 210 km from Paradip, the weather office said in its 11.30 am bulletin.

It is likely to move north-northeast wards, weaken further into depression and reach Odisha coast near Puri around afternoon, it said. It is likely to continue to move north-northeastwards along Odisha coast towards West Bengal coast and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area around midnight, it added.

Heavy rains lashed parts of Odisha on Sunday as remnants of cyclone Jawad, which has weakened into a deep depression, neared the coast, officials said. The system moved north-northeastwards at 20 kmph in the last six hours and is over west-central Bay of Bengal, 90 km from Gopalpur, 120 km from Puri and 210 km from Paradip, the weather office said in its 11.30 am bulletin.
Rain lashes Kolkata, other parts of south Bengal
The West Bengal government stopped ferry services on the Hooghly River and urged tourists not to visit seaside resorts, as rain lashed Kolkata and other southern parts of the state on Sunday with cyclonic storm Jawad laying centred 180 km from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department forecast that the cyclonic storm will move north-northeastwards towards the West Bengal coast before weakening into a deep depression during the day.

Odisha's tryst with 10 cyclones in two decades
Odisha has encountered 10 cyclones, including the approaching Jawad, in a span of 22 years and the frequency of such natural disasters is only on the rise, official records of the State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) showed. Memories of the 1999 super cyclone is still fresh, wind speed of which could not be properly ascertained at the meteorological centre, Bhubaneswar, as the velocity crossed the capacity of the anemometer available then. After the 1999 disaster, which left over 10,000 people dead, the state had experienced another major calamity in cyclone Phailin. It made landfall near Gopalpur in Ganjam district on October 12, 2013, becoming the second strongest tropical cyclone in India since 1999 one. It had hit Odisha at a wind speed of 140 mph.
Bengal govt evacuates thousands in coastal areas; heavy rain likely for two days
The West Bengal government on Saturday evacuated thousands of people in South 24 Parganas and Purba Medinipur districts and urged tourists in popular sea resorts to stay away from beaches, as cyclone Jawad' loomed large over the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast. Several places in the metropolis, North and South 24 Parganas, Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah and Hooghly districts received light rainfall since morning, the weather office said.
Piyush Goyal reviews cyclone preparedness 
Union minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday reviewed the arrangements and preparations made by state governments of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal to deal with cyclone Jawad. The minister underscored the need for drawing a comprehensive action plan towards managing this natural disaster in the most effective way by incorporating the inputs and suggestions of all stakeholders.
Goyal said public-private partnership is necessary for disaster management and mitigation and for protecting the lives and livelihoods of those affected.
West Bengal receives light rainfall
Light rainfall has already started and wind speed is expected to increase in a few hours and people in the coastal areas of old and new Digha are being asked to move to safer places, NDRF said.
Cyclone Jawad shows signs of weakening
Pradeep Kumar Jena, Relief Commissioner, Odisha said, the Jawad cyclone is currently located around 210 km in the southeast of Vishakhapatnam and 390km southwest of Puri. It is cyclone is showing signs of weakening and will move away from Odisha by Sunday evening, he said.
"All our response forces are deployed in the fields and some evacuation is also going on. People living in low-lying houses are only being moved. As an impact of this cyclone, we expect large-scale damage to paddy crops. Crop damage assessments are being done," he added.
Evacuation underway in Odisha's Puri
The evacuation of people from vulnerable areas is ongoing, said, Samarth Verma, Puri District Magistrate, adding that teams for restoration of services like power and drinking water supply post-cyclone are ready. Those in cyclone shelters are being provided with hot meals, he said.

The development that Jawad' is likely to weaken into a deep depression before it reaches the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast by Saturday noon comes as a relief for the eastern state already battered by two cyclones in the last one year - Gulab' and Yaas'.

The cyclonic storm is likely to weaken into a deep depression before making landfall near Puri in Odisha on Sunday, the India Meteorological Department said on Saturday.
"It is likely to weaken gradually and move nearly northwards during the next 12 hours and then north-northeastwards along the coast of Odisha, reaching near Puri around December 5 noon as a deep depression. Subsequently, it is likely to weaken further and continue to move north-northeastwards along the coast of Odisha towards the coast of West Bengal," it said.

Continuous rains in Andhra Pradesh's Srikakulam
Continuous rains were witnessed across the state's Srikakulam district with windspeeds of 50kmph at few locations, Shrikesh B Lathkar, Collector & DM said, adding that a total of 79 cyclone shelters operation have been carried out since Friday. The NDRF, SDRF and fire teams are on alert and deployed across the district, he said.

The cyclonic storm ‘Jawad’ lay centered at 11:30 pm on Friday, over west central Bay of Bengal about 250 km southeast of Vishakhapatnam, 430 km south-southwest of Puri and 510 km south-southwest of Paradip. It is likely to make landfall at around noon on December 5, the IMD said.
North coastal Andhra braces up for cyclone 'Jawad'
Eleven teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and three of the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) have been positioned in the three north coastal Andhra districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam on Friday as the deep depression in Bay of Bengal turned into a cyclone 'Jawad'.
Also, six Coast Guard teams and 10 Marine police teams have been kept ready for emergency operations, according to Chief Secretary Sameer Sharma.
Though the storm is headed towards Odisha and is likely to cross the coast near Puri, official machinery in the north coastal Andhra districts has remained on alert as moderate to very heavy rainfall with wind speed up to 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph is expected.

Secretary Rajiv Gauba on Friday reviewed the preparations being undertaken to tackle the impending cyclone, 'Jawad', in the Bay of Bengal region and directed all agencies involved to ensure no life is lost and property damage is minimum. The cyclonic storm is likely to reach the coast of north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha by Saturday morning and it is expected to move along the coast of Odisha and adjoining Andhra Pradesh and touch the shores around Puri by December 5 noon, according to the India Meteorological Department.

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm 'Jawad', the India Meteorological Department said on Friday. The cyclonic storm is likely to reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off the coast of north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha by Saturday morning, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

IMD issues red alert
India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday morning said, depression over Bay of Bengal intensified into deep depression and likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours. The cyclone is expected to cause heavy to very heavy rainfall in Odisha, parts of Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, the weather agency said on Thursday.
Cyclone alert on Dec 4, fishermen warned
With the IMD sounding an alert of a possible cyclone hitting the coastal area of Odisha on December 4, the Regional Meteorological Centre here Tuesday asked fishermen out in the sea to return by December 2 morning and the state government instructed the district collectors to remain prepared to face any eventuality. In neighbouring West Bengal fishermen have been warned not to venture into the sea from December 3 to 5. Keeping in view the IMD's forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall due to the possible cyclone, Odisha Special Relief Commissioner P K Jena has asked the district collectors to monitor the situation closely.

With the IMD forecast of a cyclonic storm reaching Odisha coast on December 4, the state government on Wednesday asked collectors of 13 districts to prepare for evacuation of the people and has chalked out a disaster management strategy by requisitioning NDRF, ODRAF and fire department personnel for rescue and relief operation. The forecast said that the low pressure area in south Andaman Sea will intensify into a depression and move towards the coast as a cyclonic storm on December 4 and the Coast Guard has initiated extensive preemptive measures in the eastern coast keeping it in view.

Cyclone Jawad: Sonowal reviews preparedness with port authorities
Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday reviewed the preparedness to deal with the situation likely to arise due to Cyclone Jawad with port chairmen and stakeholders of coastal areas of various states. According to an official statement, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is closely monitoring the developing situation and has urged all to stay alert and prepared.
The ministry has taken measures to secure all shipping vessels and has deployed emergency vessels. States have also been asked to alert the industrial establishments such as chemical and petrochemical units near the coast, it added.
