Children’s Day 2023: PM Modi, Congress leaders pay tributes to Pandit Nehru on his birth anniversary
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, paid tributes to India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary on Tuesday.

“Tributes to our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru Ji on his birth anniversary,” tweeted PM Modi.
India’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s birth anniversary, on November 14, is also celebrated as Children’s Day across the country every year. The day is celebrated to honour Pandit Nehru and his love for children.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, emphasising his association with “freedom, progress, and justice.”
Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge offered floral tributes to the late Prime Minister Nehru at Shantivan in Delhi.
Kharge, in a post on X, lauded Nehru as the “creator of Modern India” and a “fearless guardian of democracy.”
The official social media handle of the Congress party tweeted, “The children of today will make the India of tomorrow. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru. Happy Children's Day!"
Varun Gandhi, BJP MP and Nehru’s great-grandson paid homage to the leader, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping the social and economic foundations of modern India.
Pandit Nehru, a staunch advocate for children’s education and rights, championed an inclusive education system, viewing it as essential for a nation’s prosperity. His pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle culminated in his appointment as the country’s first Prime Minister on August 15, 1947, after Independence.
Originally celebrated on November 20 as Universal Children’s Day, a United Nations declaration in 1954, India shifted its observance to Nehru’s birth anniversary after his demise in 1964. A unanimous parliamentary resolution was passed to celebrate November 14 as National Children’s Day.
Born in Prayagraj in 1889, Nehru emerged as a prominent leader in the country’s freedom movement. To commemorate this day, schools nationwide organise various activities, including games and competitions, for students.
