Assam is witnessing a "decreasing trend" in crime rate for 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reported, attributing the improvement to "proactive measures" taken by the government. During the first eight months of this year, the state registered nearly 1,400 cases of murder, rape and dacoity.
Sarma shared this data on X, previously known as Twitter, and emphasised a declining trend in these crimes.
Our commitment to make Assam a crime-free State is moving positively in the right direction.

"Our commitment to make Assam a crime-free state is moving positively in the right direction," he tweeted, per a PTI report.
The statistics for the January to August period in 2023 reveal that Assam recorded 686 cases of murder, 656 cases of rape and 55 cases of dacoity.
Sarma, who also holds the Home portfolio, noted, "Major crimes have seen a dip due to proactive measures of the government."
The Chief Minister underlined that this drop in crime data was achieved through enhanced police patrolling, increased efficiency in crime management, the use of forensic techniques, strengthened coordination between the public and law enforcement, and the support from the state government.
In 2022, 2,282 cases of murder, rape, and dacoity were reported, indicating substantial progress. Sarma provided a historical perspective, stating that the state witnessed 3,302 incidents of these three crimes in 2021, 3,065 in 2020, and 3,385 in 2019.
Responding to the Chief Minister's post, Assam Director General of Police GP Singh pledged, "Sir, @assampolice shall make all efforts to fulfil your commitment to the people of Assam. Warm regards."

A Twitter user responded to the officer's message, saying, "Sir, the data would've been more fascinating, if the police at station stopped asking for bribe while investigating a matter."
Singh replied asking for specific inputs on the individual's experience and clarified that every police station has 16-17 CCTV cameras installed.
