As the anti-terror operations between the Indian security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district entered the third day on Friday, September 15, another Indian Army jawan succumbed to his injuries, bringing the total number of casualties of security personnel to four. A gunfight broke out between a joint team of J&K Police and Indian Army personnel and terrorists on Wednesday, September 13, in the Kokernag forest area of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, two army officers and a J&K police officer were martyred in the gunfight.
Colonel Manpreet Singh, commanding officer of the Rashtriya Rifles 19 Battalion, Major Ashish Dhonchak, and Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat were killed in the Anantnag gunfight on Wednesday morning.
The operation against alleged LeT terrorists is still underway.
Martyred J&K Police DSP Humayun Bhat was laid to rest on Thursday, September 14, in his village in Budgam, where hundreds turned up to pay their last respects. The last rites of Colonel Manpreet Singh were held in his native village Mullanpur Garibdass in Mohali, Punjab, while the funeral of Major Ashish Dhonchak was held in his native village in Panipat.
Major Ashish Dhonchak, a resident of Panipat, Haryana, was earlier posted in Bathinda, Punjab, and later in Kashmir. He was also awarded the Sena Medal in August this year. The officer was the only son of a retired NFL clerk. He is survived by his wife Jyoti, two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Vamika, and three sisters.
The only J&K Police personnel to be killed in the encounter, Humayun Bhat was a deputy superintendent of police (DSP). The 33-year-old officer was a second-generation cop as his father Ghulam Hassan Bhat is a retired IGP of J&K Police. He is survived by his wife Fatima, a one-month-old daughter, his father, mother, and a sister.
