World Sleep Day: 58% of Indians sleep late and one in four suspect insomnia, reveals study
World Sleep Day brings to light some startling revelations about India's sleep habits. A significant 58% of Indians reportedly go to bed after 11 pm, with almost half waking up feeling tired, revealed the 7th edition of the Great Indian Sleep Scorecard (GISS) 2024, released by homegrown D2C sleep and home solutions provider Wakefit.

It further added that one in four Indians believe they are battling insomnia, and a staggering 88% wake up multiple times during the night, suggesting the urgent need for addressing sleep health in the country.

Chaitanya Ramalingegowda, Director and Co-founder of Wakefit, in a company statement, said, "The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard 2024 reflects our collective sleep health. This year, 42% of Gen X reported doom scrolling late at night. The challenge is to redefine our relationship with technology, work, and well-being.”

The report suggests that digital exposure and stress levels contribute to these sleep problems. Social media and OTT platforms are why 54% of Indians stay up past their ideal bedtime. 88% of people use their phones just before going to sleep, and over 30% stay awake worrying about their future.

The GISS report provides an analysis of sleep habits in urban India. Half of Gurugram’s population and around 46% of people in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata stay up past their ideal bedtime.

In Gurugram, 61% of people wake up feeling tired. Social media keeps 43% of residents in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru awake, while work pressures cause late nights for 33% of people in Chennai, Gurugram, and Hyderabad.

The report also highlights gender differences in sleep patterns. In 2024, 9% more women than men were sleeping well past the ideal bedtime, leading to 20% higher morning tiredness among women. Women also wake up more than three times a night 50% more often than men and are 20% more likely to stay awake worrying about the future.

The GISS report also revealed age-related sleep patterns. 48% of individuals aged 18 to 30 went to bed post 11 pm. Gen X isn’t immune to late-night screen time, with 42% admitting to doom scrolling into the wee hours. The concerns of under-18-year-olds are palpable, as 43% reported being burdened by anxieties about the future.

The Great Indian Sleep Scorecard 2024 received 10,000+ responses from March 2023 to February 2024, covering all Indian cities, age groups, and demographics.
