This year, 42% of Gen X reported doom scrolling late at night. The challenge is to redefine our relationship with technology, work, and well-being.”
The report suggests that digital exposure and stress levels contribute to these sleep problems. Social media and OTT platforms are why 54% of Indians stay up past their ideal bedtime. 88% of people use their phones just before going to sleep, and over 30% stay awake worrying about their future.
The GISS report provides an analysis of sleep habits in urban India. Half of Gurugram’s population and around 46% of people in Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata stay up past their ideal bedtime.
In Gurugram, 61% of people wake up feeling tired. Social media keeps 43% of residents in Hyderabad, Chennai, and Bengaluru awake, while work pressures cause late nights for 33% of people in Chennai, Gurugram, and Hyderabad.
The report also highlights gender differences in sleep patterns. In 2024, 9% more women than men were sleeping well past the ideal bedtime, leading to 20% higher morning tiredness among women. Women also wake up more than three times a night 50% more often than men and are 20% more likely to stay awake worrying about the future.
The GISS report also revealed age-related sleep patterns. 48% of individuals aged 18 to 30 went to bed post 11 pm. Gen X isn’t immune to late-night screen time, with 42% admitting to doom scrolling into the wee hours.
