World Rabies Day is observed annually on September 28 primarily aiming to raise awareness regarding rabies. The day is aimed at supporting the ongoing efforts towards the prevention and control of rabies across the world.
Rabies is a viral infection that gets transmitted from animals to humans and is also considered a zoonotic disease. Rabies infection is caused by the rabies virus that belongs to the Lyssavirus genus. Many of us might know most dog parents or dog lovers get cautious about rabies when coming in contact with their pets.
Additionally, the severity of the disease is crucial as there is no test for rabies in live animals. The only way to diagnose the disease is through testing the brain tissue once the animal is dead or has been euthanized. Alongside, there is no treatment by far to cure the infected animal however, the vaccine plays a crucial role in preventing the life-threatening disease.
History
World Rabies Day was established in 2007 and it has been observed on September 28 every year since then. The Alliance for Rabies Control and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States jointly collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO) to establish World Rabies Day.
September 28 was selected as the World Rabies Day to commemorate the death anniversary of French biologist, microbiologist and chemist, Louis Pasteur, who developed the first rabies vaccine in 1885.
Significance
World Rabies Day was established to be observed as an inclusive day to educate, create awareness and plan for action that can encourage different groups at various levels, from international to local, and also increase the spreading of messages that would result and help in preventing rabies. The primary objective of the day includes raising awareness regarding this deadly disease and its prevention.
World Rabies Day 2023: Theme
World Rabies Day is celebrated with a cause supporting the day that marks the theme of the year. The WHO has announced the theme for World Rabies Day 2023 as “All for 1, One Health for all”. This theme will highlight that medical or healthcare facilities are not for a selected few individuals but for everyone who needs them.
