World Osteoporosis Day 2023: History, significance and theme
World Osteoporosis Day is observed on October 20. This day is marked to promote and highlight the importance of early diagnosis of osteoporosis, its treatment and preventive tips. World Osteoporosis Day was initially observed in 1996 by the National Osteoporosis Society of the United Kingdom which was also supported by the European Commission.

The campaigns that are conducted to observe the day are mainly focused on encouraging people to take preventative measures for their bone health which can help them to avoid any risk of osteoporosis and associated complications in the future.
Osteoporosis is a bone-related disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decrease, or when the structure and strength of bone change. This can result in a decrease in bone strength and increase the risk of fractures. It is a silent disease as one will not have any typical symptoms, and may also not even know they have the disease.
However, there are a few common symptoms and signs such as back pain, caused by a broken or collapsed bone in the spine, loss of weight, a significant change in body posture, and breaking of bone more easily.
To prevent the condition of osteoporosis, one needs to know about the causes so that one can avoid them. Bone is composed of minerals such as calcium and vitamin D levels. In case of loss in quality of bone tissue and minerals, osteoporosis develops. If an individual maintains the level of the minerals and the quality of bone tissue, they possibly can avoid the disease.
World Osteoporosis Day 2023: History and Significance
World Osteoporosis Day was initially observed in 1996 by the National Osteoporosis Society of the United Kingdom. Additionally, the day was also supported by the European Commission.
In 1998, the two major organisations took the responsibility of spreading global awareness following which the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) was formed. The World Health Organization (WHO) came forward to support IOF and spread information related to the disease.
The day is intended to raise awareness about disease prevention as it is necessary to understand the risk factors, symptoms, and treatment options for osteoporosis. The day also aims to raise awareness about getting tests done regularly so that the disease can be detected at an early stage.
World Osteoporosis Day 2023: Theme
The theme for celebrating World Osteoporosis Day this year has not been released by the International Osteoporosis Foundation so far, it can be observed by following the previous year’s theme.
