World Menopause Day 2023: What is the significance of the day
World Menopause Day is celebrated on October 18 to bring more attention towards the biological, social and physiological changes that a woman goes through during this phase of their life. This day also provides a platform to discuss never-addressed topics such as the problems related to menopause, including physical, mental and social.

For those who do not know about Menopause, it is a health cycle that occurs in women when they pass a certain age and experience discontinuation in their regular menstrual cycle. Menopause is considered to occur when an individual has no menstrual period for one year. The age of experiencing it can vary, however, it typically occurs in the late 40s or early 50s.
Menopause can further result in several health changes as the major hormones in the woman's body get impacted harshly. During menopause, many women go through symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and difficulty sleeping. These symptoms are caused by hormone imbalances and can be treated with lifestyle changes, over-the-counter medications, and hormone therapy.
In view of being one of such a topic that most societies do not like to discuss or talk about, it has become a concept that brings several myths surrounding it. Here are some of the common myths and facts that should be addressed to help out the women who go through this phase.
Menopause starts late in life. It’s normal for the transition to start in midlife, but it can happen earlier or later. Menopause means you haven’t had a period in 12 months.
Many people believe that the menopause experience is the same for everyone. Although a few people experience menopause in a similar way as many others, not everyone has the same symptoms or the same level of severity. Many believe that menopause only lasts for a short period of time while it can last for years in some cases as well.
Menopause is definitely a major life transition, but it doesn’t make you age old. If you think about age in numbers, menopause can start in the late 30s as well and that is definitely not an old-age indicator.
Many women who go through menopause are likely to experience mild to moderate levels of symptoms. Even for those who experience more uncomfortable or disruptive symptoms, menopause can be incredibly freeing when you consider certain aspects of it.
