Alarm bells were set off after a new variant of the coronavirus was discovered in the UK, which is believed to be 70 percent more transmissible compared to the previous strain.
Multiple countries, have imposed temporary bans on flights coming in from the UK and India has banned them until December 31.
In conversation with CNBC-TV18's Rituparna Bhuyan, Head of the National COVID-19 Taskforce VK Paul said, "The new COVID-19 strain is not yet there in India. As of today, data available in the UK suggests that there is no excess risk of mortality or serious diseases. This mutation increases infectiousness, but more data is being sought."
He also suggested that the new strain will not impact the efficacy of vaccines.
