As a country, COVID active cases are declining, but there are regional variations: Experts

If the latest data points are anything to go by, the COVID trajectory in India could be on a downward slide - the Nation's tally has risen by around 49,000 to around 80.9 lakhs in the last 24 hours. But active cases are on a decline for the 27th day in a row, slipping below the 6 lakh mark. So, what explains this downward slide? Earlier this week. Renowned epidemiologist Doctor Jayaprakash Muliyil in an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18, said that signs of herd immunity was the only plausible explanation behind the fall in active COVID cases.

If the latest data points are anything to go by, the COVID-19 trajectory in India could be on a downward slide. The nation's tally has risen by around 49,000 to around 80.9 lakh in the last 24 hours. But active cases are on a decline for the 27th day in a row, slipping below the 6 lakh mark. So, what explains this downward slide?

Earlier this week, renowned epidemiologist Dr. Jayaprakash Muliyil in an exclusive interview with CNBC-TV18, said that signs of herd immunity were the only plausible explanation behind the fall in active COVID cases.
On the other hand, A. Velumani, the founder and managing director of Thyrocare has alleged that authorities in certain districts were trying to control the testing process in order to show a better scorecard.
Meanwhile, the latest ICMR study has highlighted that the BCG vaccine, primarily used to protect against tuberculosis, can enhance both adaptive immunity in elderly people. The study is however yet to be peer-reviewed.
To get a sense of what is happening on the ground, CNBC-TV18 spoke to Dr. Sandeep Dewan, director and HOD - Critical Care at Fortis Memorial; Dr. Sandeep Budhiraja, group medical director of Max Healthcare and Dr. Satyanarayana Mysore, head of department & pulmonology consultant at Manipal Hospitals.
Talking about the declining trend, Dr. Budhiraja said, "That is definitely a positive trend and in that respect, India seems to be behaving quite differently from the rest of countries in Europe and the US, etc. Again in India, there are regional variations. For the country, the figures may be going down, but if we see figures in Delhi and NCR, the graph is actually the other way round. It is very difficult to say whether it is the continuation of the second peak or it is the third wave. But clearly what we are seeing is patients coming from adjoining states to Delhi has reduced significantly so that means the caseload has come down."
Dr. Dewan said, "Wherever the awareness levels have gone up tremendously, the herd immunity will be coming into play. It is not about the whole country but if you look at pockets of the country, the herd immunity is coming into play. In Maharashtra, the ICU patients are coming less and Delhi is showing the other way round. So it is not one theory which fits all."
