In a captivating address during the CNBC-TV18 EY Entrepreneur of the Year awards in Mumbai, Uday Kotak, the founder and non-executive director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, provided a comprehensive vision for the future of banking. Kotak, who stepped down from his role as Chairman and Managing Director last September after a remarkable 39-year tenure, candidly shared his perspective on the essential qualities that a bank – and its leaders – must embrace for sustained success.

Foundational principles for the future:
Delving into the essence of his vision for the bank of the future, Kotak outlined three fundamental human qualities – simplicity, prudence, and humility. Advocating for a shift towards simplicity in banking operations and a prudent approach devoid of overly complex financial instruments, he also stressed the utmost importance of humility. According to Kotak, humility is the cornerstone for serving customers, employees, and citizens effectively.
"First, simplicity – do simple things, don't complicate. Second, prudence – avoid engaging in creative derivatives and similar complexities. And third, the most important, humility – recognise that you're not the master of the universe; rather, you're there to serve customers, employees, and citizens of your country."
"This advice is something I would like to follow for myself and for all Indians. It has held me in good stead. I believe it's valuable counsel that has originated from other mentors, like Sanjiv Bajaj. I deeply respect and admire Bajaj, who once mentioned that an entrepreneur's job is to think about what nobody else is thinking in order to do what nobody else is doing. Many of you in this room exemplify and embody that entrepreneurial spirit."
Kotak also stressed the paramount importance of prioritising the sustainability and growth of the institution over individual achievements. Drawing parallels with global banking giants like JPMorgan Chase & Co, he underscored how the legacy of institutions outlasts the tenure of their founders. This philosophy, he believes, ensures that a bank transcends the individuals at its helm, focusing on enduring prosperity.
Additionally, reflecting on his recent retirement, Kotak highlighted the strategic decision to step into a non-executive director role. Despite physically moving away from the bank's office, he affirmed his unwavering commitment to the institution's continued growth. This transition, he emphasised, is a testament to the belief that individuals may change, but the institution must persist.
Offering a glimpse into his post-retirement life, Kotak disclosed that he has relished the newfound freedom of being a private citizen, free from the constraints of regulatory oversight. This revelation drew smiles and applause from the audience, highlighting the human aspect of a leader's journey beyond the corporate landscape.
As the banking industry navigates an era of rapid transformation, Uday Kotak's comprehensive insights serve as a guide for shaping resilient and customer-centric financial institutions. His philosophy encapsulates timeless wisdom, resonating not only with bankers but also with entrepreneurs striving to redefine the future of banking.
