TIME magazine released its inaugural TIME100 Climate list on Thursday, November 16, which includes the names of world’s most influential business leaders driving climate actions. Out of the 100, nine Indians — including Ajay Banga, Bhavish Aggarwal and Geeta Aiyar — have made it to the list.
Besides, Director of US Department of Energy Loan Programs Office Jigar Shah; CEO and Co-Founder of Husk Power System Manoj Sinha; CEO of Conservation International M. Sanjayan; Executive Director of Kaiser Permanente Seema Wadhwa; and CEO of Mahindra Lifespaces Amit Kumar Sinha also feature on the TIME100 Climate list.
The list included different segments such as CEOs, founders, philanthropists, musicians, policymakers and government officials from various parts of the world. The names have been released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference 2023, which will take place in the United Arab Emirates from November 30.
The TIME100 Climate list comprises environment leaders who have been driving a credible change for a better future for planet Earth. It also features Jennifer Holmgren, who is a scientist and entrepreneur who leads LanzaTech’s development of synthetic liquid fuels to replace fossil fuels. Fashion designer Stella McCartey, who has worked with LVMH and scaled the use of sustainable materials in the fashion industry, is also in the list. The list also features musician Billie Eilish as the star has provided over 24,000 plant-based meals for her crew during her previous world tour to reduce the consumption of animal derived food.
Among the nine prominent industry leaders from India who have been promoting climate causes, is Ajay Banga, who is the President of the World Bank Group, and has been actively ushering in a mission to eradicate poverty while fighting climatic change. Additionally, Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal made to the list as his company is India’s leading electric two-wheel scooter maker.
President of The Rockefeller Foundation, Rajiv J. Shah has been mentioned in the list as the foundation works to ensure that all initiatives and investment strategies are primarily seen through s climatic lens. The foundation has recently partnered with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet to launch the Coal to Clean Credit Initiative.
Meanwhile, Founder and President of Boston Common Asset Management Geeta Aiyer has also made it to the list as her firm prioritises investing in climate change measures and pushes the company towards more sustainable business practices.
According to a report in TIME, while assembling the names in the TIME100 Climate list, the team considered the latest economic and scientific thinking to select the individuals who can contribute to change in five critical areas — energy, nature, finance, culture, and health.
