International Day of Action for Rivers 2024: How to keep Ganga clean
The International Day of Action for Rivers, observed on March 14, serves as a global platform for communities to unite and advocate for the protection of rivers and access to clean water. This year's theme, ‘Water For All,’ focuses on the fundamental right for all individuals to participate in decisions concerning their water resources and underscores the significance of safeguarding rivers.

In India, the Himalayas are the source of three major rivers: the Indus, the Ganga and the Brahmaputra. Among these, the Ganga is of paramount importance, flowing approximately 2,525 kilometres and constituting 26 per cent of the country's landmass. Supporting 43 per cent of India's population, the Ganga is not just a river but a lifeline for millions.
Understanding the need to preserve this sacred river, the Indian government has launched numerous initiatives over the years, including the National Mission for Clean Ganga. However, ensuring the cleanliness and vitality of the Ganga requires a multifaceted approach and concerted efforts from various stakeholders.
Ahead of the International Day of Action for Rivers, here are nine key strategies to keep the Ganga clean and flowing:
  1. Promote decentralised sewage treatment plants (DSTP) at the colony level, encouraging the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation.
  2. Verify the efficiency and reliability of existing sewage treatment plants (STPs) through independent agencies, ensuring sustainable technology implementation.
  3. Develop and restore local storages such as ponds, lakes and wetlands to mitigate floods and droughts, integral to river restoration efforts.
  4. Initiate plans to restore lower-order streams and smaller tributaries in the Ganga Basin, addressing long-overlooked contributors to the river's health.
  5. Cease infrastructure development that harms the river ecosystem, including township projects that disrupt natural river courses.
  6. Map and correct land records along the length of Ganga's tributaries to prevent encroachments on active flood plains and river corridors.
  7. Restore base flows through groundwater recharge, recognising its significant contribution to river flows during lean seasons.
  8. Define ecological flow regimes for the Ganga and its tributaries to ensure sustainable river rejuvenation amid competing water demands.
  9. Explore innovative revenue generation methods for water and wastewater infrastructure operation and maintenance through pricing and valuing water resources.
  10. As India continues its efforts to preserve the Ganga's purity and vitality, implementing these strategies will be crucial. By prioritising river conservation and community involvement, we can ensure that the Ganga remains a symbol of life and sustenance for the coming generations.
