Jyotiraditya Scindia to inaugurate India's first green hydrogen plant on Feb 27

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia will unveil the stainless steel industry’s first green hydrogen project on Tuesday (February 27), established by Jindal Stainless Ltd (JSL) in Hisar, Haryana.

The minister will virtually inaugurate this project, marking a significant milestone for JSL and positioning it as the first stainless steel company in India to operate such a pioneering facility on a commercial scale, as confirmed by officials to news agency PTI.

The green hydrogen project, a state-of-the-art facility, aims to make substantial contributions to carbon emissions reduction, targeting approximately 2,700 metric tonnes per annum and an impressive 54,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions over the course of 20 years, as per insiders, PTI reported.

Despite the limited details provided, the initiative underscores the industry's commitment to environmental sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

Notably, in August 2022, Jindal Stainless Ltd, the country's largest stainless steel player, had announced a strategic partnership with Hygenco India Private Limited to establish a green hydrogen plant in Hisar, Haryana. This collaborative effort, heralded as a first-of-its-kind initiative, is expected to propel the transition from thermal to clean energy within the Indian manufacturing sector.

Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of JSL, had previously expressed enthusiasm about the project's potential impact, stating, "As a first, the green hydrogen plant will catalyse our transition from thermal to clean energy in the Indian manufacturing space. Going forward, we will continue our ESG (environmental, social, and governance) efforts to achieve net zero emissions and power conservation."
