Cyclone Michaung aftermath: Chennai grapples with widespread damage | Watch
In the aftermath of the landfall of Cyclone Michaung in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh, several parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, including the state capital Chennai are grappling with widespread damage and floods. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclonic storm has weakened into a depression over northeast Telangana after the landfall.

“Deep Depression (Remnant of Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG", pronounced as MIGJAUM) weakened into a Depression over Northeast Telangana,” tweeted IMD.
However, Cyclone Michaung has left a trail of destruction, particularly in Chennai.
On Tuesday, Cyclone Michaung made landfall, unleashing continuous heavy rainfall over Chennai and neighbouring areas. The reduced intensity from Monday did not improve the situation, as the downpour persisted, bringing the state capital to a virtual standstill. The relentless rains resulted in severe flooding, disrupting daily life and causing significant casualties and property damage.
The Greater Chennai police, in a statement on Tuesday, reported that 17 individuals lost their lives in various incidents directly attributed to the floods caused by Cyclone Michaung.
Rescue and relief operations are underway in the affected areas, with local authorities and disaster response teams working to assist those affected by the cyclone and subsequent flooding. Evacuation efforts are being coordinated to ensure the safety of residents in affected areas.
Despite the reduced intensity, the lingering impact of Michaung continued to batter the region with heavy rainfall, creating widespread chaos and disruptions.

Meanwhile, IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over north coastal Andhra Pradesh on December 6 due to the impact of the cyclonic storm. Telangana is expected to see heavy rainfall in many parts, with the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall over south Chhattisgarh, south coastal, and adjacent south interior Odisha. The weather forecaster has placed the southern districts of Odisha on alert, predicting heavy rainfall.
